Parrot AR.Drone Uses iPod Touch to Control Quadricopter
French wireless video game developer Parrot has introduced the AR.Drone, an aerial vehicle that listens to your iPod Touch or iPhone.
These unmanned devices will cruise in the air, promising an exciting iPod gaming experience amongst real-world objects and conditions.
The AR.Drone leverages a technology that is used in professional and military applications. The unit is loaded with powerful cameras, so you’ll be able to enjoy real-time video and augmented reality on your iPod Touch or iPhone screen.
Soaring in the sky like the Greek Emperor dragonfly, this quadricopter weighs just over 300 grams and contains two cameras: one high speed and another wide angle. The first camera gives users a cockpit view of everything it sees and the other one faces downward, helping to measure speed and compensate for turbulence.
Leverages WiFi
If you own an iPod Touch or iPhone, you can control the drone remotely and watch the video stream via a WiFi connection. It is delightful to watch its very stable flight made more comfortable by these cameras that warn of any obstructions in its path.
Video viewed from the hand-held device will tell you if your drone is about to hit a huge tree and you can change its course before it gets damaged.
Parrot says it took them almost four years to design this light weight chopper. The wait seems to be worth it, as iPod Touch and iPhone users can not only watch real-time video through its two cameras, but also punch command buttons to navigate the device.
Real Gaming Experience
Game developers are invited to create games for the Parrot AR.Drone.
The pricing of this mini helicopter is not yet available (1/10/2010), so we can’t get in the market yet. This new toy (tool!) should give some competition to gaming console manufacturers, as AR.Drone allows gamers to come out into the sun and fight a real battle with other players. They’ll be able to invite other iPod Touch or iPhone owners for a game that allows them to pit their helicopter against another machine. More fun is in store as new games are expected to be announced for this product sometime later in 2010.
