New iPod BMW M Power Meter App Enhances Safety for Drivers

BMW is associated with speed and each day the sign boards and someone in a TV commercial warns us not to use mobile phones or be distracted by music while driving.

So this may take a while to digest that there are companies to actually promote the use of iPhone and iPods for road warriors.

This free to use application has just been released.

BMW M Power Meter iPhone application can capture the speed in mp/h or km/h, forward acceleration, lateral acceleration and also measures the time taken to reach that downtown coffee shop.

Keep a Check on Speed

Vehicle acceleration can be measured through a built-in accelerometer in an iPhone or iPod Touch device. You don’t have to install something extra to use this application while driving. Simply put the device in a cup holder or use a windshield mount to see how fast you are driving.

This concept is not new. In 2008, another automotive performance meter named Dynolicious by BunsenTech was launched for the iPhone and iPod touch. A built in accelerometer in the hand held device allowed users to measure the performance characteristics of their cars. This app did not require any additional tools or wires.

Works in Other Vehicles Also

It is good to see that we have more innovative applications focused on keeping us safe on roads. BMW’s official blog claims that its brand new iPhone application can work in other vehicles also.

BMW M Power Meter So you don’t have to blow your money and buy a jazzy car before actually using this app. But yes, you will have to buy an iPod.

While you mull over whether to buy an iPod, existing iPhone and iPod Touch owners can use the all new BMW M Power Meter to measure the speed, acceleration in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and the time for reaching their destinations.

If you don’t like the application in its current form, BMW will allow you to choose from three different and free design skins. Customization ensures that users can set BMW M Power iPhone application according to their taste.
