Apple iPod Repair Service – An Interview with iPodJuice.com

By Kirk VandenBerghe

Kirk VandenBerghe: Today I’m speaking with Anthony Magnabosco of Milliamp LTD and iPodJuice.com.

Anthony, please tell me about your background and what brought you into the iPod battery and repair business.

Anthony Magnabosco: Hello Kirk, it is a pleasure to speak with you today. Thanks for having me on your wonderful site.

Well, our business started almost five years ago after reading an article saying that, once the battery inside your iPod died after a year or two, there was nothing else you could do except buy a new iPod. This didn’t seem right to me, and I was surprised to find a few companies online selling iPod battery replacement kits. But their websites looked horrible, and their prices seemed outrageous. Furthermore, after buying a few kits from them to try on my own iPod, I found their tools to be worthless and their instructions very poor–the whole experience was negative.

Anthony MagnaboscoI knew that, with a lot of work, I could design a better looking website, find a better tool, develop fantastic, detailed instructions with color photos, and source a better battery that would provide more playtime than the original battery that came inside most iPods. Coupled with a responsive, customer-centric service department, I knew we could quickly rise above the field of existing competitors.

Today, the website ipodjuice.com is widely respected as the source for reliable, high-quality iPod and iPhone batteries. Later, as the complexity of the battery replacement process increased with more recent iPod and iPhone models, we quickly transitioned into providing premier and iPhone repair services to customers all over the world.

Greatest Challenge

KV: What a great way to identify a niche business need, fill it, and become a leader in the field. What have you found to be the greatest challenge in running your business day-to-day?

AM: There are many, but I will try to narrow it down to just a few.

  • First, I get very involved with my business–I think about it, and the ways we can improve it, pretty much all of the time. This makes it hard for me to turn off my business brain when I head home to be with my family.
  • Secondly, customers have to take a leap of faith to a certain degree when deciding to send their expensive iPod or iPhone off to our site for a repair. You have to constantly put customers at ease from the very start, and we spend a great deal of time to make sure our website conveys trust, in addition to providing a tech-savvy and friendly customer service department that you can actually reach via email or phone. If we fail to answer the phone because all our lines are busy, or we take too long to respond to an email, doubt immediately sets in, and that is something that we are very sensitive to.
  • Third, another big challenge we face is simply keeping up with the Apple’s innovation. Apple releases new products quite frequently, and we have to learn how to repair these new devices as soon as they hit the marketplace. There is no school you can attend to learn Apple repair; our expertise is self-taught.
  • Finally, it takes time to add new photographs, write compelling product descriptions, and do all the other things required to keep our website current and informative.

Guarantees

KV: In perusing your site, I see that you offer a 10-year guarantee on your batteries. Does providing such a long guarantee put a strain on your business?

AM: We are the only iPod repair company to offer ten-year coverage on our batteries. Fortunately, very few customers have to take us up on our offer. And if they do, we are glad to send them a new one or, if we performed the installation, re-install a new one; in both cases, at no additional expense to them. One of the great things about our batteries is that, for most iPods, they have a greater capacity than the stock battery that was installed at the factory. This means more enjoyment in between charges with our newer battery.

iPod & iPhone Tips

KV: Can you provide any tips to iPod and iPhone owners regarding the care and feeding of their devices?

AM: Well, the main tip I have is to just take good care of it.

  • Don’t leave your device in your car, which helps avoid heat and cold damage, not to mention theft.
  • Be sure to remove your iPod or iPhone from your clothing, or it will get washed. We get a lot of “I washed my iPod” phone calls each day.
  • We do not recommend that you jailbreak your iPhone; it was not designed for that, so why put your expensive device at risk?
  • If you are going to work out with your iPod, make sure it is in a protective case to prevent it from drops and, perhaps more importantly, sweat, which will cause the unit to fail over time.
  • If you break the screen, if the sounds stops working right, or if your battery is not holding its charge very well, you must consider the iPod repair route. It is almost always less expensive than buying a new device.

Very few people are aware that they can get their iPod or iPhone repaired, but hopefully with interviews like this, the word will get out to those who need it most.

The Importance of Employees

KV: Excellent advise, thank you. Before we complete this interview, is there anything else you’d like to share?

AM: I really enjoy the challenges and rewards that come with running an online business. And being able to work with the great team that I have to fix these amazing devices each day makes it all the more rewarding. That is the key, really: surround yourself with great, honest, hard-working employees who bring skills to the business that you may not necessarily have, and then constantly try to innovate. If you can do all those things, you will be off to a great start.

KV: Thank you for your time, Anthony.

AM: My pleasure.
